Yes, the preengaged type work better in colder weather as they continue to crank the engine until it has enough rotation to continue to run, not just one or two cylinders firing and throwing the pinion out of engagement. Same issue with my Morris Minors and MGTD but there is a work around. Crank the engine for 4 seconds with the ignition switch off then turn on the ignition. Not possible to do with the S Type as the starter is electrically operated not from a manual pull cable.

Hello everyone, I need some help. My starter motor failed. I managed to get it out (not easy)
I have a S-type 3.8
The starter motor says Lucas 2552 D M418G. I can see it was used for mk2's.

My question is, can it be replaced without problems by a high torque like this one:

Basically the high torque starter motor is the way to go. I did mine many years a go and have not had a problem with it. A lot lighter then the original and smaller so easier to fit and it spins the engine as if you had forgotten to put the spark plugs back in.

And just for laughs, I checked my very old factory flat rate labor times booklet and the published time is 2.5 hours to remove and replace a starter motor. Three hours on a 4.2 liter E Type.

thanks for the reply. Yes, I've read the thread (otherwise I would never have been able to remove the old startermotor ;) )
but I was not sure about the starter gear. As the old one comes out a lot longer. But I suppose it is pushed
from the inside. (by the way it took me two days to get the old one out. With coffee breaks offcourse)

There is a difference in the length of the starter motors of an Auto and Manual as I was sent the wrong one first time around and when I was trying to start the car with the Manual starter motor in the teeth would not engage in the fly wheel teeth. I eventually figured it out after taking the damned thing out three times and measuring it with a set of verniers. I would suggest before you fit it to compare it with the old one and make sure you have the correct one for your gearbox.
