Horn no go

Post by muzza49 »

I used to have intermittent horn working, but now - nothing.
Have checked the horns and wiring - all ok
There seems to be a white wire going into the steering column, about even with the parcel shelf - not sure if this connects to something to do with the horns ?
Any ideas please ?

My car has no white wire going into the upper column at the parcel shelf level. The attached photo of the upper steering column parts should be of use. The connection is down at the bottom of the column near the floor to a "finger" contact that transfers power to the serrated ring and then up the column on wire (item 38) where this wire has a "tit" contact that grounds the wire when the chrome horn ring or center horn button are pushed. The photo is of a page from the factory workshop manual. The other photos are mine from when I had my column apart.

If it was intermittent before then my first check would be that contact under the horn button. It may have just gotten dirty. Be careful to remove the correct screws, there are 3 that hold the whole thing in and 3 that hold the horn contacts. Those 3 are adjustable and if you set them too close you will get a beep at the slightest touch of the ring. Also definitely check that connection at the bottom of the column. It may have got bumped somehow.
