P1B79909DN and Carolina Drivin’

Post by David Reilly »

We are getting some good Carolina Drivin’ in South Carolina with 40˚F nights and mid 60s in the daytimes. There are many two-lane back roads, in very good condition, and with plenty of curves and ups and downs- with even less traffic than Arizona. I take the 'S'-type out once or twice a month just exploring the area and have had some great runs.
A British car club, in Columbia, about an hour away, has a breakfast or lunch every month and usually another event (tech session, drive, or show). Last month we were invited to a Porsche Club of America show on Pine Island, a beautiful place in Lake Murray. There were about 15-20 Porsches, a dozen British cars and another 10 or so ‘others’. I was happy when an MG-TC was announced as the winner of the British class as a TC was my first British car in 1954. Patricia and I were ecstatic when our ‘S-type received the “People’s Choice” award! Just shows that a well turned out ‘S’-type is still a car that is noticed and seen to be exceptional.
This past weekend was the Carolina British Classics XIII – at a big Scottish festival. Over 100 cars were there. Jaguars were divided into two classes – 1975 and earlier – and post-1975. P1B79909DN was placed 3rd, behind two of the E-types, but ahead of all the others and a 340, MkVII and a couple of XJ6s.
Keep on ‘S’-type-ing!
David

i'm still amazed every time that I go for a drive out here. I can go out for an hour's drive - on good two lane back roads - with curves, - up hill - down hill - no traffic lights - and very few other c ars :D
We should have moved here 30 years ago.
But is a great place to be driving our 'S'=type at our ages.
We only miss having more interesting cars around and more driving events - we miss how much car activity there was when we lived in the UK
BUT that was 40 years ago and Ii had a 1931 Austin Seven Tourer as a daily driver! Even drove it into London.

American roads are are such a change from the congested UK roads. This is a photo not far south of you David, didn't see another car for over ten miles.

Congratulations, David. Very well deserved. And I'm sure the one-owner history helps.

Lovely pic, too, Nigel. When was that taken?

Yes very well done David, I imagine not too many British classics locally.

Pic was taken in '98 when I ran a classic car tour from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada down to Florida with CAARGB.

I go to a local show and might meet up with one other S type but I know of 10 within 30 miles of me. You must have the only S Type in South Carolina David.
Nicely turned out as usual so well done. I am sure it will just take time to discover where all the local car shows and meetings take place.
Mine has 75000 on the clock with just two owners but it has been rebuilt where as yours is untouched and so well looked after.

Thanks Cass.
I've seen one 340 and a MkVII and heard there are a couple of Mk2s. There were 6 E-types at the big show, only one from near here.
But lots of MGs, and Triumps on the drives so they are lots of fun.
I appreciated the offer to take on the Register and amjust waiting to get settled here before starting to get you involved.
Won't be long thoughj.
All the best
David
