it is a Series 3 (1986- to 1992) XJ-6 and XJ V12 third brake lamp. The Series 3 body style was continued from 1988 until 1992 but only with V12 engine. But The body is the same as the previous 1986-1987 XJ body which came with the Center Mounted Third Brake Lamp.
I have a spare one if you need one for the S type.
Do you have Gorilla 30-pound-strength double-sided Black Tape in the UK ? That is how I mounted mine, I did not want to glue the lamp to the glass, I used the Gorilla tape. Removable if you ever need to, but it won't fall off.
Thanks Jose, yes the third screen mounted brake light.
I'll have a look out for one at the upcoming Jaguar spares day. If I can't find one I'll let you know. I'm fairly sure we have that tape over here now.
Thanks
Nigel
Nigel,
there is a hole in the metal at the center of the rear parcel shelf, just remove the yute/hardura cover in the boot under the parcel shelf and you can see it . Then remove the rear parcel shelf coverings which entail removing the entire rear seat.
get a suitable rubber grommet for the hole and run the two-wire wiring harness from the lamp through it into the boot.
There is a Ground connector near the bootlid Hinge. Connect the ground wire there with a bullet or ring connector.
the positive wire you can connect to the Stop bulb wire for the tail lamp. That's all. Very easy.
Nigel,
for maximum Stop lights visibility, you can also switch or invert the Stop /Driving lights socket with the Turn Signals lights socket, the result is that the Stop and Driving lights will be at the Top position and the Turn Signals in the lower position, in other words, the opposite of factory stock.
Easy to do since the bulb sockets or bulb holders are removable from the tail lamp housings.
BUT, If your car has the Amber Top Lens, you would need to replace them with Red Top lenses.
As you know, I went a step further and had the lower lenses reproduced in Turn Signal Amber, the unexpected result is that the car looks like a ."Bentley" !
I noticed you did that on yours. I was thinking of using LED bulbs to increase the light output a bit more, the same with the rear screen brake light.
Another mod I'm looking at is fitting cooling fans to my oil cooler as it works great when moving but is practically useless when stuck in traffic with no air flow - just when its needed. I'm researching the fans as used on motorbike radiators.
