Which type clutch should my car have?

1965 3.8S (P1B 76415DN) built in late October or early November 1964 with full syncro gearbox. Should it have the diaphragm type or the spring type? Are they interchangeable? Is there a difference in slave cylinders?

C15821 is the part number listed for the 3.8s clutch and this is the spring type.

SNG Barratt list this as the correct clutch for the S type https://www.sngbarratt.com/uk/#!/Englis ... f9385e5a5a although they do list a diaphragm type clutch https://www.sngbarratt.com/uk/#!/Englis ... ba2f58dfbc but instead of it being a 10 inch clutch it is a 9.5 inch clutch and under the cars it fits it states Mk2 3.4 3.8 and 340 with no mention of the S type.

Having an Auto I have no experience in changing or working on the clutch so cannot give you any advice at to which one to fit or if they are compatible with the rest of the clutch workings you have.

The diaphragm clutch is a direct replacement for the spring type. I fitted the newer diaphragm unit to my 1965 S Type. Fit's the flywheel fine. Gives you a softer clutch action. Less pressure required to disengage thus easier in traffic. If you have any doubt just buy from a supplier that will allow a return. In my case a perfect fit. I bought a genuine Borg & Beck kit. Clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing & yolk clips.

Obviously skim your flywheel.

BTW ~ I strongly recommend you buy one of these cheap plastic clutch alignment tools. Makes life a lot easier.
