My car was missing the hose when I bought it, but the chap in the J,E.C. who introduced me to the Jaguar S type gave me some hose he had spare when sold his one to use on mine. He told me the reason for fitting the hose was that during hot weather if stationary or stuck in traffic it would stop the engine running erratic due to the hot air from the exhaust manifold possibly vaporising the fuel into the inlet manifold. It made sense to me so I will fit it in due course.
I know the Mk 2's at the Goodwood Revival racing, draw the air for the engine from inside the N/S/F wheel arch via a hose which I have seen when the bonnets are up possibly for the same reason cold air into the inlet manifold ?.
Hope this gives some thought to come forward.

That's useful to know, Dave, and does make sense. My Lotus Excel (with twin Dellortos) had a set up with a thermostatic valve that switched from hot air from the exhaust manifold to cold air from the front of the car once it had warmed up. According to my infra-red thermometer, the temperature of my exhaust manifolds after switching off a hot engine is c220C.

I do have the bracket to reinstall the system on my car, but keep putting it off because it restricts access to the fan belt, dynamo, etc. One day, I'll get round to it. This is the hose I am planning to use: https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/ ... ng-70mm-id

I don't have the rubber collar, though. Anyone know where to get one?

Hallelujah! Thanks for that ~ I've been searching & searching for that convoluted pipe!

Alan Wiedie from this & other forums had some collars made up perfectly to spec. I got mine from him. Will PM you his contact details. He is just trying to recoup his costs.

They are correct black. Just look particularly grey under flash. This is one fitted to his car with a NOS pipe.

You're welcome, Glyn. It's a pleasure to provide some knowledge to you for a change.

Thanks for Alan's contact details. I will get in touch with him.

attached are pictures of the Clamp I removed from my car when I removed the intake hose,

The illustration at the beggining of this thread does not show the Bracket where the Clamp is attached. ( part number 19 in the illustration).

the Bracket is bolted to the engine block with 2 bolts, and then the Clamp is bolted to the bracket.

Nice picture Jose. I unfortunately did not photograph mine after sandblasting & painting before fitting.

I need to get a blaster to restore parts.

Here's the 420 setup, quite similar to the S type's, except for that accordion rubber piece at the front end of the hose.

The aircleaner intake pipe on a 420 also uses the rubber sleeve like the S Type. That rubber accordion piece/bellows is non standard to my knowledge.

I strongly recommend people fit the intake hose. While it might not be the perfect cold air inlet it will at least halve the intake air temperature which helps efficiency & lowers fuel consumption. Drawing hot air off of the exhaust manifold is not wise other than possibly in very cold climates at cold start up until engine temperature exceeds ambient temperature.

As it's currently 3C daytime temperature here in the UK and the gritters are out in force every night, I finally got around to fitting my air intake hose. Thanks to Alan Wiedie for the rubber collar, Car Builder Solutions for the ducting/hose and the Jag International Spares Day at Stoneleigh for the brackets. Plus also thanks to Glyn, Jose and David Reilly for the invaluable pix showing how it all goes together. I applied Autoglym Bumper and Trim Gel to the rubber collar before fitting. Not sure whether there should be plain washers between the bracket and the timing cover. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. I'll report back when it's warmed up and the salt has gone as to whether it makes any difference to the running.
