Exhaust leak

Good morning,

I have an exhaust leak at the banjo clamps at the mufflers. Its lacking where the cut slots overlap the downpipes. I assume that when I get it loose there will not be much adjustment opportunities. So I thought that before I apply the gorilla method I would ask for advice. Pictures below.

Rather crudely, I’d split the joint and use faithful old ‘Gungum’ to ensure an air tight joint.

My car was plagued with exhaust/oil fumes for years - it really made my wife ill (I did contemplate hiring out the car to blokes who surreptitiously wanted to get rid of their other half...) it’s amazing how even a spot of oil on the exhaust can create such fumes.
I only finally solved the problem with an engine re-build and hopefully the fumes have gone for good.

I used band clamps. These come in different lengths and the ones I used were three inches although you also need a smaller length on a couple of the joints due to how close they are to the silencers and a bend in the exhaust. This band clamps over the complete joint covering all the slits in the pipes which never seem to be completely sealed with the "U" bolt clamps which tend to pinch the metal making it really difficult to remove if you need to. I coated the inside of the band clamp with exhaust sealant then tightened them up and wiped off the excess that came out the ends.

Wow those band clamps look like the way to go, along with some permatex exhaust sealant.

I also used stainless band clamps. There is a thread here somewhere where cass & I show our cars with them. Zero sealant required!

I found your previous posts.

I could not order band clamps from the supplier in England 11L before shipping. But I did find I could order them from out local parts supplier. Walker exhaust makes a 45mm band clamp for $22. I ordered four. Part number 36538.

I ordered four. Part number 36538.

Those four will do the joints front an rear of the front silencers but the rear silencers which have a single joint at the rear need a small length band about two inch as there is a bend in the pipe which the 4 inch band gets caught on. You will see when you have the car in the air.
I was very impressed with the bands and how quiet they made the exhaust and once I had sealed the exhaust puffing I could hear allsorts of other noises coming from the car that I was not aware of before.

Finish replacing the banjo exhaust clamps, checked for leakage and found exhaust ay rage front of the resonators.
I removed the banjo clamps and ordered a couple more clamps.

When I retire I am going to restore the mechanical systems. Until then I will continue to drive it a few times a month .

They look massive when they are on the car compared to the "U" bolt clamps but they do a lot better job of sealing the joints. I found the biggest problem with them was that they sealed up the exhaust and made it so quiet that I could then hear more noises that I had not heard before and am now going to have to find out what they are.
