Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
See my edit that I'm more inclined toward XJ6 Mk1

Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
You are possibly right there Glyn, XJ6 Mk1. The 420G over rider I have shown has a fat base which then curves up to a narrower upright where as I have just looked at the original photo as posted by Jaguar&MG and his bumpers are the same width at the base as the upright. When compared to a photo of an XJ6 Mk1 they are more similar. I have been trying to download a decent picture of the front of an XJ6 to show the likeness but they are all low res photos which just do not show the over riders in detail.

Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
My mistake. I think we are supposed to call it an XJ6 Series 1 and not Mk1
This is the best I can do. So much is affected by the angle at which the photo is taken. Still not 100% sure.

Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
I think it is closer than the Mk10 over rider but you are right about getting the right angle of the photo. When I was trying to compare the two all the photos I was looking at were masked by the lights in the background which confused the shape of the over rider and they were low res so could not get a good close up view.

This is my Series 1 if it's any help. Sorry but unable to rotate the side on photo.

OK — thank you — so they're obviously XJ Series 1. How annoying. I've got some other ones buried deep in the shed which came with the car (except those bumpers are clearly not actually from my car as there's no radiator-grill dip in the front one!) which I will dig out after winter when all the garden furniture is out of the shed again. Are over-riders easy to swap?! From memory the over-riders on the 'spare' bumpers are closer to what they should be.

Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
If your other bumper does not have the dip it might be from a 420 and looking at pictures the front overriders do look the same as the S Type which is good. The rear 420 and S type bumpers are identical as are the overriders.
Now the bad part. Inside the overrider is a bracket welded to the chrome shell. There is a captive nut welded to the inside of the bracket into which a bolt is screwed from underneath the bumper. Problem is the nut and bolt appear to be mild steel and they rust tight. When you get a socket on the bolt it either does not turn or the nut shears off the bracket and the whole thing rotates. In the past I have found the only way to get old overriders off is to cut the head of the bolt off with an angle grinder which is difficult as there is not a lot of room inside the curve of the bumper. Once the head of the bolt is off the over rider comes away but you will then have to get the old welded nut off the bracket and weld a new captive nut in place with a new bolt. It is probably best to attempt to remove the bolt with a socket and snap the captive nut off the bracket on purpose as removing it if it is still welded on will be very difficult.
The front overrider has one captive nut the rear has two captive nuts and bolts.

Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
The original bumper over riders & side brackets came fitted with captive/caged nuts that look like this. Jaguar calls them "grip nuts" in the parts catalogue. You can see their P/N's in the tables I posted earlier in this thread. As Rob says the damn things rust into a single blob behind the over rider webs. I cut out my over rider webs, cleaned everything up properly. Fitted new plated grip nuts, Rewelded the webs & then sent the over riders for re-chroming. They are a PIA!

Yes, I think that's exactly where I am right now! I have waded through the shed and had a good look at my bumpers with an iPhone torch!cass3958 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 12:01 am If your other bumper does not have the dip it might be from a 420 and looking at pictures the front overriders do look the same as the S Type which is good. Re: Rear Bumper over rider.
Having today got the bumpers out, I discover they are not the overriders I need for an S type. I'm not sure that they are 420 bumpers — not really sure what they are!
Anyone any tips where I might get hold of some correct front bumper overriders for the S-type and swap the XJ6 ones currently installed on my car?
