“…..The trouble with questions like that is that they are not defined and really amount to “How long is a piece of string?"………….

Maybe,……. but If the answer enlightened one soul in the workings of the ignition it will have served its purpose. The pictures in question alone make the point that there are owners out there who are not aware of the problem.

One has only to read the various Jaguar threads to realise that the lessons of old, including the likes of Ignition cable routing, S.U Carburettors, Cylinder and Piston and Crankshaft dampers have long been forgotten. The fact that these troubles have long ago been taken through the mill and cured seems lost on the average owner.

It is unfortunate that the workshop and parts manuals of the time are not always an easy read because they assumed that the reader would hold a City & Guilds Technicians Certificate. This is not helpful to the owner and we are left with gaps that although simple to some professionals occasionally require some explanation.

Until recently I contributed to the general engineering or seminar instruction of both USA and UK car clubs and I can assure you that almost 100% of those attending are not aware of ignition induction. One can only run with one’s experience, and it was this that made me decide to point out the potential problem.

Most of the cars I see have had the ignition leads straightened out by unwise or unknowing owners and mechanics and now have no relationship to ex-factory specification. If owners want to avoid any chance of ignition induction the best way is to ensure leads are crossed over every 8 inch or so.

"I am not surprised that no one knows the answer...."

The real issue is that no one knows the question thus the comment above is somewhat patronising.

It is really an obsolete problem long solved with better understanding of conductors & how to manufacture them for differing purposes. In this case to prevent inductive coupling and allowing them to run in parallel as they do in so many designs without issue.

Peace!
