yes David, because the MK-2 is their baby. But I wasn't referring to the JCNA, as a whole, the JCNA is dying, so is Jag Lovers the forum.

That's where most S type owners land and I always refer them to this page to register the car. Do they pay any attention? rarely.

Yes, thanks, Tom and David, for all your hard work on this.

There is a useful website which theoretically tells us how many cars are left in the UK. https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/

The problem is that the data (from the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency) is not especially accurate and there is a huge category of Jaguars where the model designation is missing.

However, if you just take the cars recorded as S-type and first registered 1963 - 1968, from this data https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/j ... #!firstreg, as of Q4 2017, I count, by year of first registration:

1963: None
1964: 20 Licensed; 18 SORN (off the road)
1965: 54 Licensed; 24 SORN
1966: 60 Licensed; 33 SORN
1967: 19 Licensed; 18 SORN
1968: 29 Licensed; 20 SORN
1969: 2 Licensed; 0 SORN

Which makes a total of 184 licensed and 113 SORN, making a total of 297.

Rob, I will certainly print off a few of your flyers and keep them in the car. If someone is proud enough to take their car to a show, they might well be sufficiently interested to register their car.

For non UK residents that might not be au fait with the terminology like me.

SORN = (Statutory Off Road Notification) when you take a vehicle 'off the road' and you want to stop taxing and insuring it. Your vehicle is off the road if you don't keep or use it on a public road, for example if it's in a garage, on a drive or on private land. ... your vehicle isn't taxed.

Thank you David I have updated my letter which is attached.
297 S types in the UK and we only have 60 (now) on the register. Not good.
I have been sending out emails to the S Type owners selling their cars on other sites and have had a fair few replies. One guy has at least four S Types for sale or about to be restored and he will send the details through to me once he has them. He imports CKD cars from South Africa and restores them before selling them around the world. Wales and Hong Kong are two cars he will be sending me details of. Another two guys have responded to my emails and have supplied details of their cars which were not on the register and have agreed to put my letter in to the service book for the new owner.
I have only sent these email out last night to half a dozen sellers and had replies from three with details today. 50% hit rate. I am sure I can get more on board as there are phone numbers that I will call to speak to the sellers. Perseverance is the key here. If the others on the forum join in by keeping a couple of copies of the letter in their glove boxes I am sure that new cars found at shows across the UK and perhaps further will show results. Can you supply me with details of the UK S Type and 420 register you refer to and also the Australian S type register and I will try and contact both with the idea of sharing the information we have.

I noticed that SORN lists 'S'-types in 1959, '60, '61, & '62. When writing "How Many Survive", I talked about SORN in relation to surviving 'S"-types (Check it out Newsletter Vol. 7, No. 5 in the Archives).

Yes, the data is a bit inconsistent in places, it seems. And it was interesting to re-read Newsletter Vol. 7, No. 5*. http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk has been improved since 2013, so S-types are now listed separately, though I accept there may be some in the 'Jaguar 3.8' or 'Jaguar missing' categories.

'Missing' seems to be where the 'Model' field of the record for a particular vehicle is blank. Prior to the creation of the DVLA in 1965, UK vehicles were registered by local councils and undoubtedly there were some discrepancies both when they were first registered and subsequently when the original paper records were first computerised in 1965-ish, moved to a new computer system in the 1980s and moved to another new computer system in 1998.

*Wouldn't it be lovely if we could search the newsletter archive?
