Heater box covering

I noticed on the last topic about heater pipes that there were a couple of pictures of the heater motor/ heater box that had what looks like have a insulation jacket. any ideas where to get them.

the heater boxes were covered in Hardura vinyl with edging sewn.

behind the vinyl there is a layer of yute insulation, glued to the metal case so the heater box doesn't get hot.

Designed to keep the air in the heater casing hot ~ insulate it in cold climates. We modified a Mk2 item in the same material we used for under bonnet pads. Also supplied by Barratts. Mk2 pipes enter the box at a different point. The originals just fall apart & original material is no longer available.

Barratts now supply for the S Type but you need to order.

Yes! But not original fibre glass rubbish. Looks good & neat & easy to keep clean. Mk2 bonnet same as S Type. You don't need the scuttle pad for an S Type. So we cut it up to make a new facing for the heater box cover with the heater pipe holes in the right place.

Anyway JSTYPE/HBC now available so no modification required.

I bought a large sheet of Hardura along with my new carpet set. The hardura was to line the boot/trunk sides and I bought enough to make a pair of bonnet panels and with the leftovers I made a cover for the heater box. Not hard as with the heater box off you just draw around the shape, cut it out and glue it on with the heat resistant adhesive. Not the best photo of the heater box, sorry.

My heater box hardura came from SNGB in 2014 (part U14M03), but it was remaindered then and is no longer listed. But, as Rob and others have suggested, hardura is quite widely available (in different thicknesses, too) and any competent trimmer with the pattern would be able to knock one up (spoken only as one who bought one off the shelf could say)! John Skinner seems a good bet. There's a pic of my scruffy factory original in the topic on heater pipes.

Like Rob, I also used hardura for bonnet insulation. Although not the original material, it looked more period than anything else available at the time.

the same hardura is also used in the three triangles of the inside of the boot lid.There is a rectangle cover for the plinth opening but it is cardboard with one side that looks like vinyl grain.

in the States it is called School Bus Seat vinyl, a thicker vinyl than normal. Very heavy duty.

It is not lined with yute but with cotton.

I am lucky that all the vinyl in my car is original and well preserved.The leather front seat tops that is another story.

The Original Jaguar Hardura is not any longer made & was light cotton lined/backed. What is now sold as Hardura by BAS, Skinner et al is actually a different product & a lot more hardwearing. Hardura is not really a heavy duty vinyl. It's actually quite lightweight material. I still have some new original unbacked Hardura from an incomplete boot kit. As came on the cars originally. Hardura is nothing like Ambla or Vynide.

The original as used in the boot kit is mostly different to the jute backed stuff on the original heater box (so called Hardura felt). The material used on the bootlid cutouts is different to the boot floor.

IMHO Hardura is not really suitable as an underbonnet insulation other than to look pretty. You really need a thicker padding & the kit material supplied by Barratts actually damps noise well. It's woven imprint is, of course, not original. Rob is your underbonnet Hardura lined with something or is it so called "Hardura felt"?

This is Allan Wiedie's car & he has done about as good a renovation of the original under bonnet glass fibre liner as I have seen. Unfortunately most have deteriorated into a real unsalvageable mess.


The plinth cover & fuel pump covers in the boot are grained millboard.

I think one of the issues is that the term "Hardura" is used too generically.

my bonnet panels are salvageable. and I have another set of similar padding from a 1964 S type. to restore. Pulled them from a Florida jungle car. To my surprise they were decent.

need to get in touch with Aldie to see what he did.
