Jaguar S Type MOD 1965 bought June 2018

Post by jonesdl »

Hello all, following on from my wanted post for Jaguar Britax seat belt buckles & tongues, hopefully this will work out with the photo's attached taken when I purchased the car. After spending four hours going over the car a good test run haggling etc the deal was done. I drove the car home the following week from Henley on Thames to home 75 miles no problems and put it through the U.K MOT the following month after going through the car fully. It's now completed another 250 miles going round obtaining quotes for re-spray etc up to now it's running sweet apart from wind noise as door seals required.
It passed the MOT first time the underneath is actually better than the top the tester commented on the condition which surprised him as looking at it car thought he was going to have a field day writing faults.
I have written the full history known about the car to David R when i filled in the original registration form so will not labour on here as it will be on this site once the register has been up dated in due course I understand.
Will end now no doubt you will let me know if it's wrong, as not too good at I.T.
Regards
Dave J.

Very nice for an original car Dave. The paint work in the photos looks good but presumably up close and personal there are faults or you would not be looking for a respray. I like the Webasto roof and the red leather interior. That is a nice silver grey which I hope you are going to keep when you respray her. All I can say is a nice wire wheel conversion (controversial) and a polish of the cam covers and you will have a really nice car. Also I see the radiator head is brass so get that black paint off and polish that as well.

Yes, looks like a good sound buy and a great colour combination; my dad's Mk2 was the same. Got a bit of a stiff neck, now, though, looking at your photos! :D. The result from the MOT is especially pleasing; it's hard to get a 50-year-old car through a modern MOT without something to worry about.

As well as the door seals, which do look a little crusty, I agree, I also found wind noise from the No-Draught Ventilator seals and gaps along the top of the door panels between the chrome and the steel sections. They were originally sealed with dum-dum putty, but it usually goes hard and falls out over the years. You will never get it as devoid of wind noise as a modern car, though.

Although I like the look of wires and converted my car, it is nice to see one on the original discs. Back in the day, it was quite unusual to see one on wires.

Yes, the originality of your car is a huge plus. I can see why you went for it and I'm pleased you'll be retaining its originality. Do keep us up to date as the jobs you do on it progress.

BTW, go easy on the leather cleaner/food/stuff. It's all too easy to take the colour out of these old leathers, especially red. Try a hidden area first to see how 'fast' it is.

If you need to put colour back into your leather at any time then Gliptone is the answer. They will match anything perfectly & even have a data base that goes back forever.

https://www.liquidleather.com/

Their care & restorative systems are top notch & superior to many that should know better. Take a good look at their "ADVICE" section.

Thanks guys, I never thought my original post would have generated so many different posts giving so much information on the S type all interesting stuff I hasten to add. Alas I have no problem with the roof lining having the Webasto continental sun roof which once renewed should be fine.
I have checked today incidentally and I do have the two dimples with the thumb screws to secure the radio frame my car built 15th July 1965 & 1st registered at Henley's London N.W.1 21st April 1966.

A selection of pictures of my finished re-sprayed S Type still a lot of chrome to go back on and the Webasto roof replacement to be fitted but it's slowly coming together. My main problem now it garage space and the weather as not enough room to work on the car unless to car is out of the garage.
