Thank you for the info, Rob. What type of buffing wheel and what type of compounds were you using for the aluminum?

This is the compound I used to finish off. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Max-50g- ... 2749.l2649. The picture does not do the size justice it is a very small bar about the size of a large box of matches. It will allow you to polish everything under the bonnet though. I also have an adapter for a battery powered angle grinder which takes the buffing wheels that I can use on the engine whilst the parts like the radiator top and inlet manifold are still in the engine bay. Just cover the paint work though as this stuff goes everywhere.
You can also buy a small kit for a power drill to get in to the hard to reach places. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5X-Polishing ... 2749.l2649
The buffing wheels are these, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPIRAL-STITC ... 2749.l2649
You will need an adapter for the bench grinder that the buffing wheels screw on to which is. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/245072-Silve ... ctupt=true
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, Rob. I have the grinder adapter and several spiral buffs, so I just have to get hold of a bar of the compound.

On your other subject - the air cleaner tilt - if you set the cleaner level, how far is its centerline from the centerline of the carburetor aluminum air horn into which it fits?

That is difficult to measure without taking the bracket off so you can get the filter level and that means taking the head bolts off again.
But if you measure the distance from the top of the cam cover to the bottom outside edge of the air filter housing. On the carb side it is about 10 cm and on the exhaust side about 15cm. I have been able to drop mine a little between 10 and 12mm difference, so the slope is not as pronounced now and I do not think it is hitting the underside of the bonnet insulation anymore. But that might be because I have a great big dent in the insulation from when it was hitting.

Yes Rob, that would be a tough measurement to take. Here's another one you could take to compare to my setup where the air cleaner is level. I measured from the top of the water manifold to the centerline of the air cleaner end cap clip which is pretty close to the center of the air cleaner and carb horn. It was 4 1/8", which is 104.775MM I believe. If that's close to what yours is, then your bracket must be too tall. Right?

Alan measuring the exact spot as you I get 4 and 1/5. Not a lot in it so it must be the bracket which is high. Maybe a bad batch from the manufacturers.

There is no doubt on Orlando's car & mine that the engine is sitting cocked to one side slightly. Mine used to be level & is now slanted with the same bracket. Something is wrong in the mounting area.

Here is some more information on my car, for what it's worth. The car is sitting in my garage.

A straight board across from top of fender to top of fender shows the car sitting about a half inch low from level on the left side of the car.
The first photo is with a spirit level sitting on top of the air cleaner canister - near dead level.

The second photo is with the level across the tops of the cam covers - low on the left side.

There is a 1/8" gap between the top of the cam cover and the bottom of the air cleaner canister on the right side, 5/16" on the left side.

If I were to jack the car up to level, I believe the engine would now be level also but the air cleaner would be out of level. It's easier to see an out-of-level air cleaner than an engine so I'm leaving well enough alone.

Sorry, I think I somehow changed forums for this subject.

Try and keep up Alan we are running two simultaneous topics here for the same subject.lol.

I agree the air filter housing is the thing your eyes are draw to when you open the bonnet as you can see that in line with the bulkhead.

My problem with these measurements is that I cannot trust that my wings are the same level. My car had a new front wing welded on by a blind monkey and his idiot helper who did not fix the wing in place and then try the bonnet for fit before welding it in place, so I have a larger gap between the top and the wing on the left side where the new wing was fitted than the right side where the original wing is. Only an 1/8 of an inch but it bugs me and there is nothing I can do about it.

I think like you if you can get the air cleaner housing sat paralel in relation to the bulkhead level it does not matter where all the other components sit in relation to it.

I had a look at this S Type belonging to a chap living locally today and had a look at the air cleaner on it, it was level across the engine despite as the photo shows in the last one.
