I am a very new owner of a 1964 3,4 LHD S type and working on getting to know the car. And have found this forum quite inforative. But there is an «installation» on inside of right wing just forward of the battery. What is this? See pickture.
Thanks, Harald.

Welcome to the forum and please ask as many questions as you can as we all love to impart our knowledge and love of the S Type to others.
As John has said that is the wiper motor so you are going to have to try harder if you want to catch us out.lol.
This the side on view of the starter motor. The tube which contains the drive cable is situated underneath what you can see from the top then leads in to the bulkhead and on to the wiper blades.

Can you add you location to your details please so we know where you are. There might be someone around the corner from you with an S Type. Finally can we have some more photos of your car and a little history if you have any.

OK, here's one for the wiper motor brain trust. Why does the S Type wiper system do a little dance on the windscreen before finally parking at the bottom of the screen? Neither of my Morris Minors or Austin 1300 do this.

It obviously has to do with the reset seating mechanism on the motor which I believe can be adjusted using the adjuster screw marked as 4 on Glyn's line drawing of the motor.
Sometimes I switch mine off and it still goes through 9/10th of a cycle to get back to the seating position. Doesn't bother me so I have never tried to adjust it.

Seeing that there, its clear what it is (to me), but as much time as I have spent under the bonnet especially in that area near the carbs it never occurred to me to give any thought to what that was - my wipers work so I havent fiddled with them- besides the door seals are shot so the car wont be in any major rain, and my feeble brain just labeled it as the "cruise control head" even though the car doesnt have that. Silly me. :o

The DR3 wiper motor gearwheel/crank does a quick little direction change to park. (Reverse to park when the park switch is triggered). Direction of park is stamped with an arrow on the round gearwheel cover.

There are many configurations of operation of these motors. 3 on MG alone IIRC.

Modern thinking on an old car. That is what I like about the Jaguar so easy to fix most times. No having to plug it in to a computer to tell it you have hung a new air freshener over the internal mirror.

Thanks all.
First made me a little embarrassed, but looking under the hood again the feeling faded. Finding windshield wiper motor that far away from windscreen was beyond my imagination. But with limited space and fairly simple mechanism why not.
How does the adjuster work?

Car is -64 3,4 S, LHD, manual with overdrive. Sold new in Norway, PO claimed he was second owner, ( but doing a little paper digging I think he was no. three ). He owned it for 34 years as an enthusiast car.
Never restored ( which I believe) only serviced, maintained and repaired as necesarry. Allthough repainted twice over the years. Very nice original with good tan interior ( + toolkit ), no rust, starts easy, drives nice and everything works as intended as far as know right now. (except clock). But of course a few things on the fix list, and a few will certainly show up in the future.
