We discussed this on the other forum....but needs revisited. Will be needing tires soon. Have several recommendations from local tire guys. Don't think I want Coker's Michellins for $268 a piece. Not running spokes. What say you??????

If you can find Vredestein tyres in the US you won't go far wrong. I have a set on mine and so far proved excellent for the price.

Although not marked as such, didn't the original Dunlop radials have an 80 aspect ratio?

i.e 185/80HR15

Those in your post, Joe, are 70 aspect....5.6% down on circumference compared with 80s. Speedo error, etc.

I do not know....cannot find the aspect ratio in the service manual. What do you have regarding the aspect ratio. Maybe Rob and Nigel can chime in on this one.

The 70 profiles are not right for the S Type as you need 80's. Back when the the cars came out they were fitted with crossply tyres and were not marked up with a profile. When radials were speced from the factory the were 185/15's again didn't have a profile but they all came with 80 profile. If you need any info on the correct tyres the best person to get in contact with is Dougal of Longstone Tyres but he will try to sell you Mitchlen's, they have a useful video on their web site regarding Jaguar tyres.

I concur with Stan and Nigel. 185/70s will be too small and will not fit the wheel arches as well as the 185/80/15s. I am now running thanks to Nigel 205/70/15s and they look fine. A little difficult to get on and off the rear as the arches are tight but doable. You could not go to 215s on the back.

The aspect ratio we have discussed before and is made up in the case of the 185/70 as 70% of the width of the tyre in this case 185mm of which 70% is 129.5mm for each side wall. A 185/80 would have a sidewall height of 148mm so an overall height difference between the two tyres of 37mm.

If you increase the width of the tyre as in my case to 205/70/15s then 70% of 205mm is 143.5 per side wall so an overall height difference of just 9mm smaller than the 185/80/15 which is about the wear you would find on a mid life tyre.

If you could fit them the 215/70/15s would have a sidewall height of 150.5 so nearly the same in height as the 185/80s. You could fit them but would have to fit them to the rear deflated and then pump them up on the car just to get them under the rear wheel arches. Fronts would be fine.

Wire wheels and 205/70/15s is my choice. Low, wide and sporty looking.
