One thing I did found out today, the wires need replacing, they actually screw onto the spark plug "heads", their inside is copper wire. The wires are very deteriorated. Also need the hard cardboard Loom through which the wires are routed. It is breaking apart. I don't look forward to this job.

Jose,

Those Lucas plug terminals look like the ones that are correct for my 1956 MGA. After a lot of searching, I managed to put together a set of four NOS ones from Ebay. Here is the MGA Guru article. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/ignition/ig113.htm

Plug Leads.
Orlando, Glyn and myself all have the plug leads coming from the distributor over the top of the Cam cover whereas Alan and Jose have there plug leads coming up the front of the engine bedside the coil and through the valley of the Cam covers.
I know the reason mine comes over the Cam cover and that is because when I bought new leads thay were quite short even though they were supposed to be for the Jaguar engine and they only just stretch across the top of the cam cover.
So the question is which way should the leads lie?
Both are correct at different times. The sheathed wires & the wires running through circular separators via a chrome ring under the cam cover domed nut into the cam valley wire conduit. My car is set up as original.

The Distributor cap, wires, circular separators, split copper washer end connectors, acorn nuts & Champion Bow Tie plug caps (as Alan & I use & JCNA consider authentic) were sold as a complete replacement set by Jaguar Dealers 25 years ago for S Type & other models under a Jaguar part number.

Early cars did not have engine lifting brackets.
Rob, Further regarding plug wire treatment ~ Orlando has covered the sheath. This is the alternative method used during S Type production.

can you still get the spark plug wiring Loom thing?

I just looked at SNG and could not find it. Who else might have it? Mine is falling apart if touched.
Jose ~ are you looking for the sheath/sleeve??

no, that sheath is fine, it is a hard cardboard or similar material "tunnel" through which the wires run to the rear and front. It has a rivetted bracket and the bracket has a foot under one of the D washers. I think it is called a Loom. ??

Orlando St.R wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2019 6:11 pm One thing that has bugged me for a while is that my air cleaner slopes upwards to the left and touches the under-bonnet sound deadening.

I've been investigating why this might be and here's what I've discovered.

1. The air cleaner mounting bracket was mounted on top of the chrome D-washers.

WP_20190402_18_16_39_Rich_small.jpg

I have changed this so the D-washers are now on top. It has made a slight difference.

WP_20190414_18_32_51_Rich_small.jpg

2. My air cleaner mounting bracket looks too new to be original, so I suspect it is an aftermarket replacement. I measured the height at 56.5mm between the points shown in the image. If anyone can be bothered to measure an original, it would be very helpful to know if this new bracket is too high.

WP_20190413_17_18_27_Rich_small.jpg

3. Actually the engine is not vertical - see level in third pic. The holes for the mounting bolts on the front engine mounts are slotted and both of mine are secured at the extreme ends of the slots. I'm going to get this adjusted when I have the car serviced later this month. I think it needs a hoist to take the weight off the mounts so they can be adjusted.

Any experience in fixing this issue would be gratefully received.
Orlando,

As close as I could measure my original bracket, the distance, compared to yours, is 58.74mm. I have no explanation as to why your filter sits so high. More thought is required.

Great ~ we have 3 brackets the same & I'm sure Rob's will be too. Takes that out of contention.

Thanks very much for going to all that trouble, Alan. It seems as if the answer does not lie in the bracket.

Thanks Glyn. Since SNG "improved" their website, I can't find anything !
