XJ6 Engine Problem
Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
Hi Notman thanks for your suggestions, I've just checked the carbs and everything is fine with those. The small piece of metal I recovered from the combustion chamber looks like the end of a valve spring, I've yet to strip the head down to find out. The bores look in good condition still showing the honing markings, I have a honing tool and a lathe and will do as you suggest. Thank you once again for you help - Nigel.

Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
What a pity. Be interested if you find where the offending chunk of metal came from. Head/combustion chamber should clean up easily with a Dremel.
Good luck!

Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
Quick update. Removed all the pistons to give them a clean up and hone the bores - no more damage found.

It is, I've got to strip the head down yet and do the tappets- can of worms coming up!

Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
Update on the engine. All back together now, I found a sticking inlet valve when doing the tappets so was replaced, nothing else caused concern.

Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
It's good to see it back together. Looks really tidy, too. Nice job.

Thanks chaps, lots of hours work on it! Still got to look at the auto box yet and the engine bay.

Re: XJ6 Engine Problem
The auto box is at the local specialist and I had a call from them with the result of the first look, it turns out at least half of the threads securing the sump are stripped and it was mostly held on with sealant. Some years back due to an arm injury I had to entrust a classic car garage to service the car and fit a replacement gearbox sump as it had a crack in it, looks like they've done the damage as it was fine previously when I changed the oil. As the casing is cast iron, fitting inserts is not feasible so the manager of the gearbox shop thinks he has another casing stashed away to replace it with. The rest of the parts are in the cleaning machine so waiting to see what else is going to cost.
