Rob, I stand corrected regarding the fog lamps. After going through the Construction and Use regs it states

Electrical connections: No individual requirement.

Cass,
you asked HOW fog lamps would have been wired without a 4-position lights switch:

Here's how, the rare Lucas Fog Lights Switch.

I don't know which Jaguar models had it, but I think the Big Saloons did. The MK 4, 5, 7, 8, 9.
I don't know why there was never a MK-6. Maybe Lyons was superstitious about the number 6.

There was no Mk6 Jaguar because Bentley came out with their Mk6 just as the Mk5 was being changed so they jumped 6 and went straight to 7. The Mk numbers are all over the place as there was no Mk1 until they updated what was called the 2.4 in to the Mk2 Jaguar and decided to call the 2.4 the Mk1 retrospectively.
There is no Mk3 but the S Type was known as Utah 3, the XJ3 and should be known as the "S" Model which what it says on all the publicity material and on the service manuals. No one has come up with the answer as to what the "S" stands for or who started calling it an "S" Type after the "C" "D" and "E" Types. "C" stood for Competition and was used on the racing XK120 and the "D" and "E" just followed on but why an "S" Type?

MK3 UTAH was the secret code name for the 3.4 and 3.8 'S'.

No question that the S type is the MK3.

Not so secret now though. I found when I was cleaning my seats little paper tags that read Jag XJ3.

first time I see the "XJ3" terminology.

MK3 yes, but not XJ3.

that tells me the XJ name was floating around years before it became a Jaguar model.

this is the article that mentions the "MK3 UTAH" during development. It does have some mistakes but otherwise a good article.

I have seen this before Jose and it does mention the XJ3.

In development the Mk1 saloon had been known as the Utah, the Mk2 was christened Utah Mk2, and therefore the factory named the independent rear suspension Mk2 as Utah Mk3. It also went by the new Jaguar codename of XJ3. As with all Jaguars of the period, Utah Mk3/XJ3 would use the twin cam XK engine in 3.4- and 3.8-litre capacities.

I think like the old times we have hijacked this thread and moved on to new ground. Perhaps it should be reclassed Jose.
