Yes ~ as Nigel mentions earlier much of the difference seems to be in the size of the bonnet shut/slam panel assembly which changed P/N on late cars. I look forward to the "Ryton Resolution" of matters gap!

You are right John. I have put the two photos together as best I can with the tapes lined up.
You will see from the arrows that the radiators are near enough in the same place at 6 inches give or take as the photos are not quite alined.
The distance from the chrome grill to the engine block is the same at 14 inches.
The distance from the chrome grill to the front lip is the same at an inch and a 1/4.
It is the width of the slam panel where the discrepancy is. On Nigel's car the slam panel is 3 3/4 inches from the chrome grill where as on my car it is only 3 inch. My gap is about 3/4 of an inch.
There is a quarter inch difference in the centre of the hole where the locking device sits further to the front on my car and further back on Nigels.
It is no wonder that Nigel cannot find a secondhand bonnet to fit the distances are all over the place.

Well, who'd have thought it? Wonder why they did that. I notice from the parts manual and 'production changes part two' on the S-type Register website that the following parts also changed at the same point:
  • Capping Strip at front of front wings
  • Panel assembly joining front wings at top
  • Bonnet assembly
  • Base plate for bonnet catch
  • Peg assembly for bonnet catch
  • Filler panel, valance to grille opening, upper
As the website says (http://www.jagstyperegister.com/product ... nges_2.htm):
Early in 1967, a revised bonnet assembly, lock and catch peg was fitted. The parts (filler panel, capping strip, bonnet assembly, bonnet lock, base plate, peg assembly and associated fittings) were sufficiently different from the original parts that they were instructed to be used only as a complete set, not interchangeable with the earlier assemblies.
Those changes slightly pre-date the adoption of Varamatic steering, but that may just be coincidence.

Nice one Orlando, So my car is correct with the gap as a late model rather than an early model without and it is all down to the bonnet catch assembly being changed. This possibly means that the two bonnets that Nigel got hold of are for late S Types whereas his is an early ie pre 1967 model and this is why they did not fit.

Great ~ thanks guys, I learned something more about S Types.

It would seem quite a major change to make so late in the production cycle of a model.

Many thanks for clearing this up, I now know where things went pear shape with the bonnets I bought. I think the gap needs filling as the ram effect at speed through the radiator is lost with it.

I am disappointed that you didn't already know this Glyn.lol.
As for the gap Nigel I might have found a use for my lower grill chrome filler that has been chromed on the wrong side for the bottom but the correct side for the top. I will pull it out today and see if it can be fitted with a bracket. Might be better in polished brass but I iwll look at making something to fill the gap.

Just to add about gaps on the slam panel, My 64 car also has a gap between the rad and the slam panel about, 25mm.

As Glyn would say, 64 was a strange year! But it is strange as this modification did not, according to the paperwork Orlando found, come in until early 67?

Has your car ever had a bump in the nose? Might have been repaired with the newer parts.
