Rob - Thanks for all your research on this. When I got my car it had the transmission indicator nacelle piece on it but it has no letters at all. When I took that off I found that all of the indicator parts are missing, so that when you move the shift lever nothing happens in the gear indicator part. The parts box contained a nacelle with P, R, N, D1, D2, L. So, just to clarify, from reading your info again - the DG250 box that I should have but clearly don't, would be a cast iron casing; if it is a BW35, it would be an aluminium casing, and if it is a Type 8 (maybe from a 420), it would again be cast iron, and have a P, R, N, D1, D2, L shift pattern - have I got that right? I hope to check it out again tomorrow with my pick-up magnet.

It would clearly seem that this car does not have it's original transmission. No 1965 car had a BW 35 or Model 8.

Yep that is right Rolley and as Glyn has stated no 1965 S type should have a BW35 as they did not come in until 1967 and no S type was fitted with the Model 8 but if your gearbox like mine was damage and replaced God knows what you might have. As I found out only recently my gearbox is a BW35 but from a Daimler as my gearbox does not have the 2nd gear start mode only Drive and 1st gear hold even though on my Nacelle I have 2nd gear nothing happens when you select it.

My transmission case is iron not aluminium. So it looks like I might have a Model 8. I hope it's a good one.

Yep possibly a Model 8 then from the 420 if it has an iron case but the same gear set up as the BW35. The Model 8 was not fitted originally to the S Type but was around in the 420 and the 420G Jaguar line up from around 1965/66. It withstood a higher torque than the BW35 which is why it was fitted to the 4.2 engined cars. It is an older gearbox than the BW35 having been first used in some American monsters in the late 50s. In 1969 the new XJ6 also used the Model 8 but they moved to the BW model 12 gearbox in 1970.

It seems that the Model 8 was also used in the 2+2 E-type at some point. And I just happen to have an original E-type service manual (that my wife found at a book sale for $10) that has all the required information. So that's a big plus.
