Refitting the chrome

Glyn,

Did you use the same rivet used on the doors and scuttle on the center bonnet chrome? If not, what did you use?

Got most of the doors and scuttle done. Worked great. Also got the side bonnet chromes on.

I do not know if Glyn found this as living in SA it possibly does not rain as much as it does in the UK and I doubt if many people takes their car out in the rain as much as I do (Can't refuse to turn out for a wedding just because it is raining) but I found If my car sat still in the rain for any length of time water would seep through the bonnet rivet holes and sit on top of the head. Not good trying to start the car when you have all the spark plugs knee deep in water!
To cure this I used a clear silicone sealer on the underside of the bonnet along the centre groove which stopped any ingress of water getting in to the engine bay I also found the boot plynth and badges were letting a small amount of water in which was creeping in to the spare wheel well so I smeared some clear silicone sealant behind these too.
If you read the Blue book about fitting the front and rear screens it also says you should inject a sealant behind the windscreen rubbers to seal them completely. Page N16. This is not so much to seal the screen from water coming in to the cab but to stop water seeping down in to the places you cannot see like the double skin of the rear wheel arches and chassis legs. Before I sealed mine completely I even had some water from the front screen dripping off the underside of the dash getting the carpets wet. All done now.

Both back & front screens are sealed both body side & glass side with a slow cure Den Braven sealant on my car. Zero leaks.

Riveted button fasteners & badgework are all fitted with Tectyl applied & no leaks thusfar. Bonnet centre certainly no leaks.

OK guys.....

On either side of the license plate is a chrome strip. Attached is a photo of one of the strips with the fasteners in place. Is this how it is installed on my Jag? In this position, the plastic post will not go through the fastener. Did you make a small hole so the post will go into the fastener? I was planning to use a nut driver to hold the fastener in place while I push the post through the fastener. ???? Looking for help.

I think mine are held in place with a star washer which is pushed on to the rod from the inside of the trunk/boot. Similar to what you are trying to use but instead of a nut it is just a metal washer with a star shaped hole of the right size to push over the plastic peg/post. the points of the star lock onto the post and hold it in place.

Those type fasteners were used on my hub cap Jaguar badges. Thanks for the info.
