I'm planning to drill a hole with a diamond drill and glue a halogen bulb in. H1 will fit but then I have to solder a second connection, H7 with a bit modification on the lamp seat-ring might be a better choice. Glue will be the bond used to glue stoves , will take 1400 Degrees C, I assume this will do the trick. Have been looking for the glue which is used to glue lightbulbs in their socket , but couldn't find it.

An interesting bit of kit. Good luck and keep us updated as to how you get on.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me how are the spot lights normally switched on if you do not have a four position switch?

possible solution.:

the MK-X, 420 and the Series 1, 2,and 3 XJ-6 have inner high sealed beams that measure 5.875" inches in diameter.

In the USA, the XJ came with low beam 5.875" inch sealed beams in the outer wings too. Made by Wagner or Phillips.

Couldn't those be used as replacements?

However, those are not Fog lamps but Driving lamps.

In the USA, most of us can't tell the difference between a Fog light and a Driving light. Actually very few people can.

in my car, I installed a separate Lucas toggle switch with separate wiring and a Relay to switch my auxiliary lamps because the way the factory designed the 4-way switch for the factory-installed Fog Rangers, the headlamps will go OFF when you set the switch to Position 4.

This is factory policy in all Jags up to 1992.
Fogs ON, Headlamps OFF.

I wanted independent control of the auxiliary lights in both my S type and XJ-6 so I defeated the system.

With my 100 watt auxiliaries I can make truck drivers and other high beam abusers to fall on their knees asking for mercy, makes them humble!

In the UK it's still illegal (as far as I know) to have fog lights on with main beam, this Is why the fogs only come on with dip beam. As said previously driving lamps are something else. On my XJ series 1 the inner driving lamps only come on when switched to main beam and the auxiliary fog lamps only come on when switched to dip.

in the US the Fed Regulators can't tell the difference between Fog and Spot  :D

You want light? flip the switch to ON. That's all they know. That's what I did.

Nigel it is not illegal to have front fogs on with full beam just pointless as the full beam hits the fog and reflects back to you meaning you can't see any better. Front fog lights are designed to go under the fog or at least shine down giving you a better view of what is a head. The law only states that fog lights should only be used if the visibility is below 100 yards. In a new car the rear fog light should go off when you go to full beam but this just indicates that visibility is above 100 yards and you are a numpty for forgetting you had your rear fog light on.

Driving lights are completely different and these like spot lights should only be used with main beam and should be connected to your dip switch.

Factory Fog lights when fitted had the four position headlight switch and at a show the other day my mate in his S type had a four position switch and as you quite rightly state when he turned his switch to the fourth position his main lights went out and the fogs lit up.
My question still stands though. My car seems to have been fitted from new with driving lights which I have now connected to my main beam foot switch. But if these were fitted from new and are driving lights not fog lights how would they have been turned on or have I done it correctly?

there must have been a switch somewhere Cass.

No wiring evidence? Were they connected to the Red/Yellow striped wires at the front?

( NOTE: Some people say Orange/Yellow striped wires and they turn Red with age. )

This is what the dash looked like when I bought the car and the wiring was a mess. I did remove some home made wiring with switches one was for a set of Hazard lights he had rigged up but all this came out and we started from scratch.

yikes! the lamps must have been rigged for sure.

I had been dragging a Marchal Relay kit for auxiliary lights since 1970 and it had instructions for wiring auxiliaries 3 or 4 different ways. That is what I used in the S type.

I did not want to modify the factory wiring, what I did is reversible, can be eliminated without touching the original wiring harness, same with the electric mirrors and hazard warning kit.
