Albions car on FaceBook

Post by cass3958 »

One of our members Albion from Malta has been rebuilding his S Type for a couple of years now. I have just supplied him with some finishing parts. I was searching through FaceBook yesterday and came across Albions page where he has some great photos of the bodywork he carried out on the car. Albion has given me permission to put this link to his page on here so you can all have a look.

He has told me he came across two new old stock front wings and two rear quarters from a car in the UK that was being scrapped. The work was extensive and the photos document the work really well. These were taken in 2014/15 and it is interesting to see behind the panels that are normally fixed to the car. Every S Type will have rust issues and these photos highlight where those areas are and how difficult it is to get to them unless you go to the extent that Albion has with his car. I for one am looking forward to the finished photos but Albion has said it has not progressed that much further from these photos yet due to other commitments.

Glyn it makes you think about what an S Type or Mk2 that has not been restored actually looks like under the skin even though it is on the road!

It makes me realise how lucky I was with my rust free shell!

The joy of living in a hot climate. Malta is hot but I think this was a UK car imported to Malta so the UK rust worms had really had their fill before it departed these shores. Albion has done some great work on the shell and it is another one saved even if it is not yet finished.

That's one very brave restoration job! Brings back a lot of memories of the work I've had to do over the years.

Hi guys,

It has been long since I accessed this forum, and yes unfortunately progress is really slow on my S Type. While putting it all back together various issues pop up and so that slows me even further. As some of you might recall, I had all bright metal re chromed and unfortunately it was not a nice experience. Had to recommision it all after the first workshop did an aweful job. Now, I am being puzzled by an issue which I do not know if any one on this forum ever encountered, thought of or maybe given it any importance. Upon assembling chrome window frames I noticed that both front quarter window glasses are from the Lhs. This I noticed because of the script on each glass which is supposed to be read from the outside. I tried to find a replacement, but all of them seem to be the same. Non of the dozen or so replacement I found is for rhs. Any ideas about this?

I have a spare set of quarter light window glass in their frames which I have just looked at and you are correct. The right side window has the Triple X script etched on the inside and the left side has it etched on the outside. I have also checked my car and it is the same so it does appear that yours is normal.
Do not know why but it is what it is.

Good morning,

Thanks for the info. This confirms that Jaguar did not give much importance to that. Most probably their suppliers did not bother much with producing left and right side quarter window glass since it is the smallest piece maybe. If anyone has got it differently it would be interesting to know though. I am hereby attaching a picture of some body parts ready to be mounted.

Make sure when you mount the front wings that you also mount the bonnet and get everything lined up and the gaps correct before welding the wings in place. Sadly this was not not done by the professional monkeys that did mine prior to me buying the car and the gaps between the tops of the wings and underside of the bonnet are different on both sides. Only I notice but it bugs me everytime I think about it and without cutting the wings off and starting again there is nothing I can do about it.
