Wire wheel balancing kit

Post by cass3958 »

Drove my car with the new wire wheels on for the first time quickly this last weekend and above 50 to 60 MPH I felt the wheels start to shake as they are not balanced. Did not have a problem with my old wires.
My local garages do not have the equipment to balance wire wheels as they require a special set of cones and the garages never see wire wheels these days so do not possess the kit. I can buy one for Jaguars. Its a 52mm kit but it cost £75 plus postage. Does anyone on the forum in the UK have a set of wire wheel balancing cones I could borrow?
If not I will bite the bullet and order a set and then anyone else on the forum in the UK who wants to borrow them can.

Yes, you can borrow mine. I'll put them in the post over the next day or two.

Make sure the cone is well lubricated where the wheel hub sits on it, otherwise it doesn't quite go on square.

Thank you I am still contemplating buying my own but cannot justify £75 right now.

Well I thought about it over night and this morning had to drive to a garage to get some electrical work done. The shake on the front wheels is quite pronounced over 50 mph so decided that I have enough friends with cars that sport wire wheels that I would be justified in buying a set of cones and renting them out at a £5 a time.
They come in two sizes. The 52mm cones fit the likes of the Jaguar and Alvis then you have the 42mm cones that fit the MG and Austin Healeys. A single set of 52mm cones cost £75 but for an extra £25 you can buy both the 52mm and 42 mm cones. The full set it is then.
Glyn the cones you have shown above are basically the same as I have bought.

Thank you for the offer Orlando of the loan of yours but I think I need my own.

That's fine. I quite understand. You never know when you'll need them - punctures, leaky spokes, etc.

Thanks ~ The tyre shop I used in Johannesburg had them. I need to check & see if my favoured tyre shop in Cape Town has & if not buy a set. Will be fitting new tyres later this year.
