front disk/rota brakes

Post by johngosnell »

I have booked my car into the garage for replacement front disks/rotas and pads. I like to buy the parts so that they are ready for the garage to replace but as I have said on a previous topic the brakes have been upgraded to 4 pot calipers. As they are a 4 pot caliper I suspect that they were from a jag XJ6. The question is were all the disks the same dimensionally I know that some disks were vented ( mine not) but is the diameter all the same even after the upgrade.

Regards
John

John, do you know the make of the conversion?

If they are Còopercraft and not vented discs then they will be standerd S Type using XJ6 Series 1 pads. Series 1 XJ's (4.2's) had non vented discs.

When I bought the car amongst invoices the work for the brake upgrade said fitted new disks and rebuilt 4 pot calipers but no other info so this is why I think that the calipers are from a series 3 xJ6, there is no info on the calipers apart from marks where possibly a ID sticker was. I was able to contact the Garage who did the work but although they remembered the car they could not give me any more info.

As a add on I have given the car to my son although I will still pay for repairs, I have not been able to find a good driving position so because of my medical issues I never feel in control of the car, the Rover for me is far better

John the calipers fitted must be after market items e.g. Coopercraft or Zeus, the only other commonly done conversions are using 420 but this requires changing the uprights to 420 items.

As far as I know Series 3 cars were fitted with 4 pot calipers along with XJS's including the V12 variants all using vented discs.

hi Nigel
The Brakes are 4 pot calipers, and as the invoice said rebuilt calipers this is the reason I believe that they are from the XJ6.But the discs are solid?.

Any chance of posting a picture of the calipers? The S3/XJS calipers have Girling or a large G on the side of them as part of the casting. I can't remember what the S1 calipers look like now as mine went in the bin over 20 years ago when i replaced them with XJS items and vented discs when I rebuilt my S1 front end.

I will do my best , as you no I am in a wheelchair but I will give it a go. I have taken some pictures but I keep getting an error message of file to big, I don't know if it is because the camera was on zoom so I ca pull the caliper in, I did look to see if there was any markings as you suggested but I could see nothing

Changes worked and files now added, well done Tom, I don't think that the pictures will make things clearer as to what type of caliper I have
