Refitting the chrome

Hi guys,

Attached is a screen shot from Sng Barratts web site related to the Outer Chrome finisher kit. I just got a complete kit of which quality did not impress me much. All rods being wider and longer, the spear edge is much sharper and flat ending rods having the end distorted (a replacement has already been offered). Item numbers 32, 33,35 and 36 were missing altogether, but after getting back to them they told me that they are available in store and will be sent. Now, my only problem is that the diagram as per picture attached does not match the picture on their website. When asked about it, they have confirmed that the ones they have do not hold the rubber weather strip in place, but are purely for decorative purposes. Obviously unless there is another way of holding the rubber strip, these are pretty much useless to me. Has anyone got a picture of such finishers?

We have just covered this issue at Jaguarforums.com. The originals are no longer available and have not been for some time. Those 4 shoulder trims are location specific & complex to manufacture. Seems nobody is willing to tool up to make them & sell only a few. I have no picture. Hope you can find yours & have them rechromed. I'm sorry you are unhappy with your chrome kit. Barratts have had a number of suppliers over the years & some were far better than others.

I managed to see a set, they are different from mine. I already had mine re-chromed so I will use them. Later I will try to slide the rubbers in. Hope some silicone spray will help.

As I said on the other forum, once you have pulled the rubbers into the slot in the trim leave some excess on both sides for a few weeks while they shrink back to normal from being pulled into the slot. Only then trim them for length or they will shrink to shorter than the trim.

This is a photo I have just taken of a spare set I had in the attic. One is slightly damaged but the other three will clean up nicely.

If you are fitting new chrome spears BD25577/BD25578 from SNGB (parts 29 and 30 on the diagram), you will find sooner or later that on the LH one (29), the pins are too close together and do not fit the holes in the body. The pins on the RH part (30) are correct. It's hard to imagine how Ashwater could make them to different dimensions. There are some NOS on ebay.

Also, the pins on the new repro items are threaded, with nuts supplied, yet there is no access to the other side. They should be fitted in friction bushes.

I bought a job lot of S Type spares which included a large amount of chrome. In there they had a pair of darts with nuts on the back which were in better condition than mine but as you said Orlando I could not see how they were fitted as you had no access to the back! I thought at the time as they came off an earlier car, 1966, that the design had changed to the ones on my later 1967 car but obviously they were repro parts.

Yes ~ the holes at the base of the C Pillar for the spears are blind. Friction bushes as original is the only way to attach. It is interesting. The spears I got from Barratts about 15 years ago already had threaded pins ~ real dumb ~ but the pin spacings were correct. Wierd!

This piece of chrome infront of the leaper on my car is not long enough compared to the original piece. I bought it from M Robey's a while back and when I challenged them about the length they said it was the only length supplied and no one had complained before. Has anyone had a similar problem with this piece?

Mine comes right to the edge of the bonnet.
