Register of chassis
David just sent this email out to everyone and I thought I would reproduce it here to make a topic of discussion. Hope you don't mind David.
Your webmaster has just put the updated ‘Register of chassis’ on our website. We currently have 701 Jaguar ‘S’-types on the Register. They are in 25 countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA, and Zimbabwe. Of course, of those with known locations, most are in the UK (58), Australia (77) and the USA (204).
• 303 are lhd 3.8-litre (5.6% of production), 206 rhd 3.8-litre (2.1% of production), 37 lhd 3.4-litre (2.7% of production), and 155 rhd 3.4-litre (1.8% of production),.
• 61% have automatic gearboxes, 34% all-sychromesh manual gearboxes and 5% have the Moss manual gearbox. One all-synchro and one Moss box are close ratio gearboxes
• 54% have wire wheels.
• 61% have power steering.
Please check the information on your car and provide any missing information and let us know if there are any errors.
I am quite shocked by the UK figures. Only 58 S Types registered in the UK? I thought there was an estimated 400 S types in the UK so we are missing a lot for the register. The 400 hundred was mentioned in an article I read which worked it out as a percentage of the number of S types and Mk2s that had been built. That was less than 2% of the 25000 S Types made world wide but the figure of 58 is only 0.23% so possibly only 0.1% of S Types destined for the UK market.
I think we need to make a concerted effort to find more UK S types for the register. I know of at least 7 S types within 25 miles of me including mine, which I have added to the register. I will be contacting every advert I see for an S Type for sale to try and get the details. Some will not give the VIN details over the phone or by email but I have spoken to some sellers who are willing to put a letter advertising the S Type register and forum in the glove box of the car when they sell it. Anyone seeing an advert for an S type for sale could you please either PM me the details or stick a post on the S Types for sale topic with a link and I will chase it up.

Re: Register of chassis
It might be an idea to design a flyer we can download and print out a few to keep in our cars so we can hand them out at shows we go to as I've talked to S Type owners and told them about the register but never had anything to give them.

Re: Register of chassis
Nigel, I spoke to a guy the other day who is selling two S type Jaguars on Ebay from his collection of 40 classic cars. He would not give me any details of the VIN plates but said he would pass on my details to the new owners.
I have designed a letter which I will be sending to him so he can add it to the service booklet or place in the glove box of the car so the new owner can contact us.
I have attached a copy for you or anyone else who wants one which you can print off and keep in your car for the shows. If you think this should be changed in anyway please let me know. The letter can be edited to change the contact name, details and location so you can use it in any country. I will bring copies of the letter with me to Coventry in June.
My apologies to David for stealing his material and for assuming the title of "keeper of the Registry UK."

Re: Register of chassis
That looks good Rob. I think it also needs a direct link to the forum as well. I'm trying to find a link to the updated register David spoke of in the email but no luck- can you tell me where to look? Thanks - Nigel.

Re: Register of chassis
That is a brilliant idea Rob and your letter looks good to me covering all the info required. Nigel I normally just click on the red icon on the forum page on the top left hand side which takes me to the register information page.

Re: Register of chassis
Wonderful Rob. I'm going to keep a few in my cars & request our two local spare parts vendors that serve the classic Jaguar market to keep a few. S Type numbers in SA have dwindled terribly from the approx 1000 3.8's built locally plus some imports prior to late 1965 when local production commenced. Many repatriated to the UK as rust free examples & many others broken to build Cobra's etc.
I will also provide details of my 2 donor cars as scrapped as they are way beyond redemption.
Great work.

Re: Register of chassis
I have done that in the US. Referred them to the website, told them to place a free For Sale ad in the forum, etc.
last two I e-mailed, one did not reply, the other thanked me for my interest in buying the car ( ? ).
it's like they don't care, they want to get rid of the car and will not bother.
Second to that, there is already a S type / 420 Register in the UK. Maybe the UK S type are registered there.
There is also a sort of a Register in Australia, where they claim to have THE FIRST S type built in 1963.
people get annoyed when you give them this sort of information, they think one is trying to sell them a membership. So I kinda stay away from approaching people unless it is in another forum.

Re: Register of chassis
Thank you all for your efforts to get 'S'-types on the register. I know haw frustrating it ia, as I send and Q about the chassis number to every one that I see for sale - my reply rate is about 5%. A copy of my brief emal query is attached.
Rob,
I like your flier.
and have made a couple of small suggestions.
Jose,
All of the JCNA Registers seem to be about dead. The page was not moved to their new website years ago. It istherefore very hard to find and hasn't been updated in eons still having a twenty year old address for us and an out-of-date email address. All efforts/requests to JCNA to update have not been implemeted leading me to belive it has been abandoned,
Cheers,
David

Re: Register of chassis
Thank you David for all your efforts & the recent update to the Register.
This is the only truly global & current S type Register & needs to be kept alive at all costs. We will help!
