Power steering pump heat shield
We started this under Brake pad wear so I have set up a new topic just for this.
The heat shield on the PAS pump is a stainless steel sheet bent and drilled so it can be bolted to the back of the PAS pump but only on later models it seems.
On the back of my original pump there are four bolt holes and two of these are used as fastening points for the heat shield. My original pump gave up on me a couple of years ago and I had a spare pump from a 1965 S Type in the garage which I fitted but this did not have the four bolt holes on the rear plate to fix the heat shield to. I will eventually get around to having my original pump rebuilt and when I refit it the heat shield will be be replaced as well.
I have been looking through the different manuals and parts catalogues I have but I cannot find any reference to this heat shield. Is this an original part fitted by the factory or is this a home made add on my previous owner did? The S Type would have been the last Jaguar to use this PAS pump system as the 420 went to a stand alone pump on the other side of the engine driven by a belt rather than the pickup off the back of the old dynamo.
Below are photos of the original 1967 pump with holes and the heat shield and a photo of the back of the 1965 pump now on my car which does not have the holes.

The reason I think there was a heat shield originally on the Varamatic-equipped cars is due to this service bulletin, which mentions it: That said, stainless steel seems an unlikely material for the factory to use. And yours does look remarkably fresh for its 50 years. So I wonder if maybe it's a more recent copy. However, it looks fine and I can use it as a template for having one made. Though I will have to devise some other means of attaching it, as my pump, being a much earlier one from a Mk10, doesn't have the bolt holes on the rear.
At some stage, when you are bored, would you mind jotting down a few measurements for me?

That bulletin makes sense as my car built Sept 67 with the chassis number 8973 is beyond the 8682 start number for the 3.4s and as it was so late in production it might account for why it is not in any of the parts manuals.
Stainless does seem over the top and although it looks new that is the joy of stainless. I did clean it up when I took it off. I will try and get the dimensions for you but I will have to pull it out of its box again so give me a day or two.
As for fixings the holes in the back plate of the pump are only blind tapped holes so if you are adventurous enough you could always drill a couple of holes and tap them out. I will get the vernier out and measure the depth of them for you.
I contacted Classic and Vintage dynamos today about the PAS coupling and they do have more. I spoke to Jim on the number you gave 01623 747666 and he said he had several but they were still attached between the PAS pumps and the Dynamos. He is going to split some later today and check if any are serviceable and I will call him back tomorrow. As he is a Dynamo man not a PAS pump man perhaps he has a late PAS pump with the holes in the back for sale. I will ask tomorrow because I could do with a spare. Would be cheaper than getting mine rebuilt and might solve your problem Orlando for fitting the heat shield. I will also ask if he has any heat shields lying around that he has removed.

Thanks for the info Rob. No hurry on the measurements. Bit too scared to start drilling my pump, tbh, esp after having it expensively reconditioned a few years back. It would be interesting to know what Jim has in the way of heatshields, though. Should have asked him myself on Sunday!

I find it interesting that with the Varamatic Power Steering that toe is set with the two outer tie rods & the centre rod fixed, whereas with Manual & the first & second type Power Steering boxes the outer rods are set to fixed length & toe adjusted with the centre tie rod length. I guess due to precise centre required with variable ratio off of centre with Varamatic.

I spoke to Jim at Classic and Vintage Dynamos to day and purchased a coupling for between the Dynamo and PAS pump.
I quizzed Jim about the heat shields for the PAS pump and he stated he had never come across one before. He stated he had seen some heat shield for Dynamos but not for the PAS pump. He also checked the rear plates on the PAS pumps he had an none of them had the holes that my original pump had for the shield to screw in to. He stated there were two types of backing plates he had come across, a flat plate and a humped back plate which I have not seen. None of his flat plated PAS pumps had holes in the back.
The mystery thickens!

YES! A documented extra that no one else has or has seen. Wonder what the men at Pebble Beach would think of that. Thats put the price of my car up by a couple of quid. lol.
I am going to have to get my old pump rebuilt so I can refit it.

Yes ~ It's like the push in HT lead coil that is documented for S Type & David Reilly has never seen. His car was supposed to have a push in coil but doesn't. Who knows.
