Brake pad life & Power Steering
Thanks guys ~ very helpful as I am keeping my eyes open for a Varamatic box here in SA. Having now driven one it is far better feeling wise. That heat shield is a good idea & could be made with better shielding materials today (e.g. sandwich construction aluminium shield). Not fitted to earlier cars like mine.
Orlando ~ was the standard detent in your cross-member large enough to accommodate the Varamatic steering box? You came from a manual steering box.

Re: Brake pad life
Thanks, Rob. That's very helpful. Yes, it would be interesting to see the bolt holes on your newer pump at some stage. Mine is an early pump (1962) and has no spare bolt holes, so if I want a heatshield, I'll have to devise some other means of attaching it anyway. I'd expected it to be attached to the exhaust manifold bolts, so that may be the way to go.In the meantime here are some photos of it in situ on the original pump.
No, Glyn, the non-Varamatic cross-member has to be modified (or replaced with a 420 cross member - or whole front suspension, if you prefer) to accept the Varamatic box, which is larger. Mine was modified in somewhat agricultural fashion, but it works well enough. Was the standard detent in your cross-member large enough to accommodate the Varamatic steering box? You came from a manual steering box.

Re: Brake pad life
Perfect. That also looks like a later pump with bolts on the rear which could be used to secure a heatshield.

Re: Brake pad life
Seems there were at least 3 different crossmembers. No detent, 2nd type (torsion bar) box detent & Varamatic detent. I think my detent is too narrow for Varamatic.

Orlando, I am away at the moment so not near my garage or car but that looks like the back of an early pump as the later one that the heat shield was attached to has separate bolt holes purely for the heat shield. When I get back later in the week I will get the old pump out and take a photo of it for you.Orlando St.R wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2019 9:26 pm Perfect. Re: Brake pad life
Just to update you on the dynamo couplings, I picked a second-hand one up yesterday at Stoneleigh from Classic & Vintage Dynamos of Shirebrook, Notts, UK. The price was £10! It has a little wear, but is fine as a spare. You can contact Classic & Vintage Dynamos on 01623 747666 or classic_vintage_dynamos@yahoo.co.uk.

Re: Brake pad life
Better condition than the one in mine. Did they have more that you are aware of?
ou can get away with the slight wear in the rubbers you have on that one just by turning it 90 degrees so the unused rubber shoulder is up against the metal shoulder.
