BORG Warner DG gear selector

Post by johngosnell »

Does anybody know if it is possible to move the gear selector from the right hand side to the left of the steering column and the indicator over to the right.

Regards
John

with a good study and a well thought out plan, I don't see why not.

Along the same vein, I moved the speedo to the right and the tach to the left, to match my XJ-6 setup, just because I was used to the XJ-6. It required a longer speedo cable, drilling a hole, and adding a rubber grommet to the hole to protect the speedo cable as it "torques" when driving. Never a problem once I did it, but I studied it first.

In your case, I would remove the steering wheel, the upper and lower nacelles, then remove the adjustable section of the steering column, and take pictures of all the parts, including the Neutral Safety Switch under the column. I think the shifter cable might need to be shorter but if you can re-route it to take up the slack, it might work.

Jose
were all the xj6's floor shift or were there any with a colomn change like the S type. Life would be so much easy'er if I could have either a floor shift or move the existing shift over to the the left.

Happy new year

John,
Happy New Year to you too!

the first XJ-6 in 1968 had a transmission tunnel / center console shifter, or "direct shifting" as some call it, so I assume that since then, all XJ are "floor" shifted. The last steering column shifter mount was the 420, at least in the Small Saloons, don't know about the MK-X or 420-G.

If you convert to the Getrag Sport automatic transmission used in the XJ-40, you can have the shifter at the center console, just like the Manual cars. This conversion is done regularly to MK-2 and S type by G. Whitehouse Auto Ltd. in the UK. though it is expensive.

Will do Jose,
The reason I have been interested in this change is because the hand controls for gas& brake is also attached to the right hand side of the steering. This means every time for example I am parking the car I need to keep my right hand on the brake and then move my left hand across the steering wheel to move the gear selection. If you are not sure what I mean look at the attached.

I'd say anything is possible but will take a bit of ingenuity to figure out, the Bush for the selector lever will have to be cut off the column and welded on the other side and a coupling to the cable will have to thought out. There is also the electrical lock out switch to accommodate. The indicator lever bracket would have to cut off and relocated on the opposite side as well.

I just purchased a load of S type and XJ-* parts and found a center console shifter complete with cable, gear position escutcheon, Neutral Safety Switch, etc., off a V12 XJ-S.
