SU Fuel Pumps

Post by Jose »

I purhased a lot of S type, XJ-6, and XJ-S parts and found two new, boxed, SU fuel pumps.

I want to use them for my S type but don't want to go through the hassle of installing them only to find out they are not good.

Does anybody know in the States who could test them and prepare them (if needed) for installation?

Jose checking the pumps yourself should be easy. You will need to run a power source from a battery across the terminals and if they tick they are working. If they don't tick then send them away but again they are very easy to sort out as they just have a set of points which might need adjusting to get the correct gap.

Yep straight 12v from a car battery and it does not matter if you get the polarity wrong as they will work positive or negative ground earth.

From memory if you pop the top off you will find the points and sometimes these stick or the mechanism which rocks back and forth making the tick noise also sticks due to not being used. Try putting power across the terminals whilst moving the rocker with a finger tip and you might find it comes to life. Although this you tube clip is about an MGB SU fuel pump they are the same as the Jaguar pump and it explains how to clean the pumps points.

This is a regular occurrence on one of my pumps when the car hasn't been used for a while (the other has electronic switching). A few taps with the plastic end of a screwdriver usually gets it going.

thanks guys,
the pumps are new in their boxes, one even has the build tag and instruction sheet.

I will remove the plastic cover of the non-ticking one and look at it.

ok, I checked it. The points are stuck together all the time. Rusty too. I removed the top points section and cleaned / polished the contacts. Reassembled and retested. Nothing. The points keep stuck together. Should they be separated? :D

here they are. The one on the left is the evil one.

Take the top off the good one and compare them Jose. I cannot remember if the points should touch or be apart but I would have thought there should be a gap and then they snap together then release again. There is a youtube clip of a guy setting up the SU pump on an MG which runs the same pump as the S Type. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VGQPg15-8E
