Front valance under bumper

Post by Orlando St.R »

I had wondered why my 1965 car had no front valance, whereas others did. A little research led me to part no. MRK4 on the Martin Robey website: https://www.martinrobey.com/jaguar/inte ... t-valance/. Enlarge the image to see the underneath view when in position. There are six fixing holes.

I ordered one of these on Thursday and it arrived on Friday. I offered it into position yesterday and surprise, surprise, there are four holes in the front crossmember which line up exactly with the new part.

Plus there are holes at each end of the front crossmember still with screws inserted, which clearly haven't been moved since the 70s. Looking at old photos, I think my car had a valance until the 70s, when my dad clearly decided it served no useful function and removed it! The screws are 1/2in long no.8 pan-head slotted self-tappers with captive washers. I couldn't find any of those, so I will use some large repair washers with standard no.8 screws.

I'm going to stonechip my new valance before installing it, but hopefully installation will be straightforward - once I've got those old screws out.

the valance has only those vertical screws holding it in place, no screws at the ends.

My car had it when I bought it, still has it.

I added half-dollar sized stainless steel "fender washers" to each of the 4 screws for more holding power.

It is called a valance but it is really a Splash Guard, protecting the horns, belt, and some rubber parts from water splash and road debris.

Correctly held in place by self tappers & copper washers. P/N BD25969

From my vast reference picture library of S Type clunkers around the world. An original valance on an original car for info. As I say supposed to be attached by 6 self tappers through copper washers although knowing Jaguar this could have varied. (aircon car & some weird mods under there)

I got around to stonechipping and installing my front valance. I had to drill out a particularly stubborn self-tapping screw on the left-hand end of the front cross-member and what remained of the original valance fell off!

Mine is painted body colour as it was originally on SA built cars & correctly attached with self tappers & copper washers. Sorry reflections make things hard to see.

BTW ~ Note the Trico Reservac tank sprayed medium brown. That is the original colour fitted to my car so we matched it & kept it that colour.

That looks very smart, Glyn. But I'm worried by the unauthentic lack of oil on the underside of your car. Are you sure it hasn't run out?
