Stan I think you are right that the most likely culprit is the hydraulics. A systematic inspection is required. The clutch hose maybe perishing so have a bright light to hand and bend the hose to expose any weakness. A braided hose will present a greater challenge but is there any evidence of dampne...

If you've not converted to electronic ignition , for the cost involved I'd change the points and the condenser. When was the last time the distributor had a small drop of lubrication on the shaft ? A couple of drops of oil should do it , wipe off any excess.Advance weights might be sticking a little...
