Rob

The problems I experienced (on R-R/ Bentley) revolved around the light NOT working when the boot lid was opened. Not very convenient on a winters night

The advantage here was that I was not required to be locked in the boot and we used disposable apprentices for such checks when needed !

The mercury ones often gave trouble tripping in when the car was on a steep incline.

I am intrigued as to how you know the light was coming on in the boot on a steep incline. Did you have someone in the boot just for the purpose of checking for you.

Rob

Thanks for your effort, I owe you one!

I am surprised, in fact astounded, that these lights do not have any translucent cover. When I have cleared my current list of jobs I will have to sort out the boot light, preferably before Winter. I may just go along by wiring up a quality switch tripped by the boot hinge mechanism. The mercury ones often gave trouble tripping in when the car was on a steep incline.

If you find time could you show a picture of the boot light / mercury assemble.

I have no idea what it looks like as mine is completely missing.
Norman finally got around to taking a photo of one of the mercury boot lights for you. I have three and none of them work. Someone said they had taken one apart and cleaned it up to get it going so I might experiment with the worst one I have and see if I can work out how it works and if I can clean the mercury to make it work. If I do I will report my findings and then see if I can get the others working as well.

One question I have to ask though is the one I have in my boot is sat with the bulb down when the boot is closed and bulb up when the boot is open. This allows the mercury to flow across the bulb holder and create the contact. Mine does not seem to work nor has it since I got the car as the previous owner installed a push button switch to override it. My question is, Is my light set up correctly ? ie as described above or should it be the other way up. I too have no reference as to which way it should face!

I have just sent out a spreadsheet with the items I have in my boxes to a couple of members. if anyone else would like a copy before I start putting the items on EBay please send me your email address in a PM. If there is something on the spreadsheet you are interested in I can send you a photo so you know what it is.
I have loads of wood and chrome items plus a lot of original hard to find items in really good condition.

Do you have the spreadsheet for us yet, Rob?

I have nearly completed it just have to fill in a couple more part numbers and should have it out by this weekend.

Norman I have a couple of boot lights if you are talking about the Mercury light bulb holder but I have not tested either of them yet to see if they work and if they did I would probably hold on to them as one would go in my car as mine is not working and the second I would keep as a spare as they are so rare. If I find a third I will let you know.

And as for the Guy from London he was given a polite NO. Well I actually told him if he thought the SNG system was better he should go and ask them if they would do a deal and reduce the price of their stainless system down to £200 to suit him. Arse.

ROB

Do you happen to have a boot light in your collection?
