Thanks John my speedo cable has been doing the same thing so might do as you have done and replace the inner cable.

Fitted new inner speedo cable

Recently noted my speedo needle would bounce a fair amount up to about 20 MPH. Decided it was time for a new inner cable which is usually the cause of this issue. Nissonger and Palo Alto Speedometer wanted an astronomical price to make up a new inner cable. Moss had the complete cable for a MOD car (96" long) for only $24 so bought that and removed the inner cable and fitted it to the original outer cable as fitting the complete cable is a PITA. Still the nylon ferrule at speedo end had to be shortened a slight bit to fit into the speedo and allow the retaining nut to screw in. Lubed with white lithium grease and road tested. You need small multi dexterous hands for this project. Speedo now dead steady at all speeds.
