Yes ~ Like Norman, I prefer your solution Rob.

Yes if the line is always live but you just cut the earth you could potentially have a false earth/bare wire/short somewhere in the engine bay and the choke will fire up. By cutting the live via the switch on the dash close to the live feed from the fuse box there can be no current running down the wire to fire up the choke.

“…………..If I read it correctly, you’re killing the choke power at source whereas I’ve killed it at the final point with my switch. Is there any difference?......”

Yes. The choke power is taken from one of the wiper motor live feeds and can be left potentially vulnerable.

The advantage of killing the choke live feed at source is that every section downstream of the manual switch, that is say from the wiper motor feed, is dead when the choke is switched off. That makes the circuit much safer and protects the master feed.

If the circuit is interrupted nearer/after the otter switch, say to “make” the earth, the live feed and wiring from the wiper motor will always be live. That is not best practice as it leaves the live wiring vulnerable.

Yes, the light bit is a better suggestion. Thanks.

No real difference in the result except I still have the working otter switch which still kicks in once the engine is warm. I just control the power going to the circuit with my switch so I physically have to turn the choke on to start the engine and I have the light on the switch working warning me that the switch is on.

Thanks for the advice Cass, will try this and see if it improves the choke.
Your choke switch modification is interesting. If I read it correctly, you’re killing the choke power at source whereas I’ve killed it at the final point with my switch. Is there any difference?

I've always felt the Otter switch was too long in switching off and installed a switch in the facia locker, breaking the earth circuit where I switch it off after a minute or two (It probably means the Otter switch isn't working properly, but one can always tell it's on with the sharp 'hiss' from the engine)
My car currently is struggling to rev without coughing when cold starting at the moment, which suggests some adjustment/cleaning needs to be done.

I fitted a switch in to my choke set up several years ago. It is a rear electric windscreen switch which allows me to turn the choke on and off when I want but I still have the otter switch as well. You can read about it here. http://www.jagstyperegister.com/forum/v ... hoke#p1867
Works a treat and looks good as if factory fitted.

On the starting side I recently had the same problem in the cold and it was suggested by Glyn to adjust the height of the AED needle. There is a small locking nut under the head which I released and lengthened the height the needle sat at. This also worked a treat and the car starts first time and runs smoothly when the choke is on but as the weather warms I am going to have to drop the needle height slightly as I do not want it running too rich.

The needle in the AED might need adjusting for your present ambient conditions. Try & find a sweet spot. You don't want to keep adjusting it between summer & winter.
