I would inspect the exhaust system for any leaks and also all floors for any open drain holes.

also the boot seal, is it correctly oriented?

Thanks, Alan. That's more or less the routing I used for the scuttle vent pipe, thanks to guidance in this thread.

I agree with you re fumes entering via the boot, as when the boot popped open one day, the fumes quickly became immeasurably worse.

Don't know if the issues in this thread have been resolved but here is my input. First, the fume question. I always had exhaust fume smell in the cabin and theorize it comes from the boot area as exhaust gets sucked into the boot past the weatherstripping and forward into the cabin through openings in the rear parcel shelf. I changed my headliner a couple of years ago and the fabric on the back piece around the window and forward on the pieces over the doors was stained with soot in places. I tried to plug as many of the openings in the bodywork as possible before installing the headliner but since I have not driven the car much, I don't know if the problem is solved.

I'm also including a few photos of my scuttle drain pipe that has been discussed. As Glyn says, it comes off the firewall nipple (no clamp) and down to clips on the footwell. It IS close to the exhaust header. I routed mine down between the heater pipes which was about the only available way.

You can have it yellow if you wish :D

It's a pleasure. Will always help if I can. I tried to photograph on my car. Can't get my camera in there for a macro shot or achieve enough contrast of black pipe on dark green paint to be of any use.

That's brilliant. Thank you so much, Glyn. Really, really helpful.

I used black heat shrink on all my tabs. Works a lot better than that original sleeve & looks authentic.

those are the routing tabs. Normally there would be a black nylon sleeve which slips over the tab. Those sleeves were used all the way to 1992, so they can be sourced from XJ.

Best I have pre heater box. Moulded pipe. It just pushes on. No clip. Follows the scuttle shape down to under the car. Held by some body tabs. (my car hiding on the right)
