Harrie I have replied to your PM. The thing with PMs is that you send them but they stay in your outbox until the person you have sent it to reads the message and then it passes to your sent items.

Hi Rob,

I sent a PM yesterday. But I didn't see them in the sent-box. So I think you didn't received it?
Anyway thanks a lot for your answers and advices. I have read your story about rebuilding the Adwest of your S-type in the (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1038&hilit=adwest). Great that will help a lot and give me the courage to do it myself.

The chassis nr of my car is P1B9396BW
I will call SNG tomorrow for the seal set

Keep you informed about the progress.

Regards,

Harrie

Yes I got hold of a digital copy and then sent it to David to be added to the documents page. It is needed for some of the items they fitted to the later S Types and the 420s but Jaguar failed to add a supplement to the S Type manual to cover them.

Thanks Rob. Did not realise that. Presume that was you? Now in my archive in case I get the itch to fit the Varamatic. I do prefer the drive.

Looking at the SNG website, the part number states it is for the 420 as well as the S Type so I would say yes it is the correct seal kit and yes it will have the seals for both steering arm and column ends. Before buying the kit though just speak to SNG on the phone and confirm using your chassis number. If you would like to add your chassis number to your signature I can check some of the details for you.
Once you have the seal it if you follow my write up on stripping the PAS box down you should not have any problems but please contact me direct via PM if you do. Make sure when fitting the seal over the steering column side that you follow my suggestion of covering the splines with clingfilm to stop the splines from cutting the inside of the rubber seal. If not this will start leaking again within a year or two.

Hi,

Thanks for the additional info. The Marles Varamatic is leaking on both outer seals (steering column side and drop arm side).
Attached 2 pictures.
I see that SNG offers a sealing kit (11026*) for the Varamatic. Is this one suitable for my power steering unit?
And does it contain both sealings mentioned above?

Thanks,

Harrie

To make matters worse the Marles Varamatic Bendix (Adwest) steering box is only covered in the 420 Service Manual. Not the S Type Manual.

Harrie the steering box you have there is the later Adwest Marles Variomatic not the type 1 or 2 Burman. The Adwest was used in the later S Types from around 1967 and is classed as the superior PAS box to have. It is a lot easier to strip and repair yourself than the Burman and I successfully replaced all the seals on mine in 2020. The account of me repairing my box is found here. http://www.jagstyperegister.com/forum_n ... lit=adwest

The Burman box is harder to work on as it has a lot of ball bearings and moving parts that fall out when you strip it down. In contrast the Adwest used Nylon bushes which I found had little or no wear and did not need replacing. The other difference between the two boxes is that the Adwest is fully adjustable by tightening or loosening a couple of screws and bolts so any slack can be taken up when you reassemble it. The Burman on the other hand is only adjustable with shims and I am not sure if they are available any longer. The seal kits are different but SNG should supply a new seal kit for the Adwest box.

Below are photos of the Adwest Marles you have compared to the original Burman type 2 PAS steering boxes.

PAS steering unit

by HG_S-type » Mon Jan 04, 2021 12:52 pm

Hi,

I have a few questions about my steering unit of my S-type 3.4 (1968). The power steering is working properly but the steering unit is leaking and I would like to repair this. A few questions:
1). Does I have a first- or second-type Burman steering unit? I attached some pictures after removal of the unit.
2). Is it doable to replace the sealings of the unit by myself?
3). SNG offers a sealing set SU9001. Does this fit on my type of Burman steering unit?

Thanks,

Harrie
