This is intriguing Glyn. I have just had a good look at the photos and there is one photo of the VIN tag. The details are hard to read until you blow the photo up but they seem to read Chassis number P1B7760 Engine number 7B 9918-8 Gearbox number JBN 9942. Body number 4B8905.
This car is not on the register but looking at the numbers they do not seem to match up together. It appears which can possibly be seen in the condition of the VIN tag that the engine has been changed and a new VIN tag put on the car.
P1B7760 should have an engine number around 8800 and 8900 not 9918. Vise versa engine number 9918 should have a chassis number in the region of 8700 to 8800 not 7760.
The body number which I think reads 4B8905 relates closer to the chassis number P1B7760 than the engine number 9918.
The number stamping is very bad and when you compare it to my original VIN plate you can clearly see it has been done in a very amateurish fashion. Also if you look at the cut out at the top of my VIN tag it is a V shape where as the altered VIN Tag has a U shape cut out to go around the vacuum pipe.
If I was to guess I would say that this car has had a new engine fitted and the numbers on the VIN plate have been altered to make it look like a matching numbers car. It would have been interesting to see the old green style log book they say came with the papers and compare it with the VIN tag?
